I know those Osram ones have a relatively short life, but I'd expect it still to go to 1000s of hours...

went to autobahnstormers web site and they are doing a HID conversion for £120. I asked the guys whether i need self levelling suspension and washer before installing HID and he told me No!

I am very tempted to have the convesion done. But is it legal? Will it invalidate my Insurance?

Define 'Needed' ;)
No, you dont NEED them to make them work.

But to be legal you do.

Insurance, without levelling etc, if you were to go head on with someone, and they said your lights were too dazzling...can imagine a bit of a problem, otherwise, cant see em being noticed.
Sure they all say Mods HAVE to be declared though.

Not needed  to enabled HID conversion but as a legal requirement.
Nice point you have made, let me contact my insurance for an opinion.

I can recommend Phillips  X-TREME bulbs, i have tried various different bulbs in my wifes Nissan Note and i found these to be the best for Performance, bear in mind these dont give the blue tint other bulbs do as these are for performance only not show and give a very bright white light. Cost was £18.00 for a pair.
