A further thought If he is a mechanic, a, it should matter too much, B, could he have had time to swap some parts and pretend it is yours that has broken?

he has just phoned back and he was ok about it, said it wernt my fault etc, i said it wasnt anything to do with the valves and then he said its costing him 300 quid to be trucked back to essex, out of the goodness of my heart i offered him £50 quid back which he seemed greatful for, to be honest i thought he was a bit stupid to drive it back and not trailer it. i  rekon he was tanking it back and that why its blown, soddin bugger broke my his passat

Is this right? Pretty peed this week after I bought an item off ebay last week, instant pay pal payment, with 1st class post. 5 days no item, so bought one from a shop, as needed. emailed seller asking him to refund my paypal, no response. 3 days later item arrived, posed day after my email. Wanted to leave a comment on his feedback but did not want a negative back.

2 points about the sale of your passat

1 if he was a mechanic he should have known better than to try and drive it home, if there was a valve sticking it usually means its bent and if you keep driving especially at high revs it will snap drop into the top of the piston and the end result will be the conrod through the side.

2 if the headgasket was leaking a high amount of coolant into the oil the oil would loose it properties to the extent it could have seized a little end usually rsulting in a conrod through the block.

Eitherway entirely his own fault so I wouldn,t lose any sleep over it.

'Sold as seen' is a pointless phrase as it means absolutly nothing! If your a trader nothing is sold as seen, if your private then everything is, as the old saying goes, buyer beware! He has no come back on you at all, especially if he was aware the car had problems. It is possible the gasket poured a gallon of coolant into a cylinder and caused hydraulic lock but thats his problem not yours. If you are still worried have a look through the ebay community motors board, do a search and you will find loads of posts from people who have had similar problems. If the guys a tech he should have known better than to go belting down the motorway in a car with a knackered head gasket and sticky valves!

What if, a buyer has completely unreasonable expectations, doesn't view a car before bidding, buys it anyway on impulse, and then leaves negative feedback for the seller because there is an aspect he's unhappy with (which he should have checked out).

That means the seller can't then leave a negative feedback to say the buyer was unreasonable / etc..

A sale is a 2 way thing, and as such feedback should be allowed from both sides.

thanx for the advice guys, looks like the guy has took it on the chin and accepted it. I will send him the £50 as i promised altho i dont really have to, its a gesture of good will and to the response of stopping sellers leaving negative feed back i think is wrong, this will leave sellers in a right pickle but ebay have said that sellers will be able to remove unfair feedback and have more powers againg npb's, but lately i have had around 10 npb's in about 30 auctions, i must admit that this new rule will open the flood gates for buyers to mess sellers about, impulse buys then mind changing etc aspecially on larger items like cars TV's n the such. i will give them 12 months or less before they scrap it and also read in computer active that FEEBAY is raising its prices, its expensive enough, i am sourcing alternative like ebid.co.uk they are ok but not yet big enough.

This is a long overdue policy change from ebay.

If a buyer doesn't buy, there are other processes in place, such as NPB.  If buyer does buy (keeping his side of bargain) then seller should be happy.  If seller is worried about time wasters signing up to bid, use the selling tools to block.  No problem.

Now, the problem with the previous rules, most sellers were holding buyers to ransom.  If a seller was poor, or item missing or rubbish, a seller couldn't leave negative feedback, as sellers wait to receive feedback before giving, and retaliate if not good.  This allows sellers to get away with anything, as buyers that keen to maintain their own feedback.

Block the sellers leaving bad feedback is the best solution with the current system to protect the buyers (most important part of ebay).  Sellers have other avenues to complain about buyers...
