OOF'ers Views On ATF changes!
« on: 21 December 2011, 07:48:20 »

3 Questions for those who have changed their gearbox oil..

1. just thinking what would OOF'ers views be on changing the ATF, is it more headache than it seems (DIY oil change)..

2. How did you guys know (any symptoms) that you needed to get the oil changed

3. What sort of mileage does Vx say to change it??

Thanx guys  ;) ;)

Easy enough, but messy job.
remove both sumps,
clean / replace filter
clean mating faces, reassemble with new gaskets, or pref instant gasket
refill with new ATF
Shower, many, many times to get rid if the stuff.

about every 60000, but according to VX...sealed for life!

needs doing to improve smoothness of box really.

Don't forget to get a new sump washer.

Thats the thrust washer, and a gearbox off job to replace.

Personally have never done this on a drive way, always sort a lift, either at a friendly auto specialist locally that I know, as it's got to be worth £60 labour for him to do it, or at a meet on here. Guffers cam belt meet was ESP handy with pits and lifts.
Its very messy, and being able to stand straight under the car while working for such a length of time is a must for me.

Re symptoms, if your lucky, thumping while engaging gears is usually the first sign. If your unlucky, loss of drive, slipping, limp mode, and a fubar box.

Get the ATF changed.

Ps clean the filter, rather than renew.

Although, inviting debate on this, is it worth even cleaning the filter? ESP if no oddities are found.

It's not a fine mesh filter by any means. The magnet catches fine particles in the sump, so any large particles are for the filter to catch. Which can be removed or shaken out. And let's face it, if you've got large bits of debris you have a lot more to worry about than changing/cleaning the filter.
Plus, given only a percentage of the ATF an be removed, a spanking clean filter seems a little pointless.

I suppose cleaning purely to check for debris is all that's needed.

Personally though Chris, if I was going to the trouble of dropping the sumps plus renewing the gearbox oil, I would put on a new filter.  :-*

I put a new filter on the first time round then cleaned the old one at my leisure, so it's ready for next time.

If it's done galactic miles on the current fluid I would have a new filter to hand in case the old one isn't fit to re-use. Besides, the chap who advertises in straight 6 news does filter plus gaskets for 30 quid IIRC.
