If a VX dealer did that job they need shutting down. :o

Think the problem people seem to have is fitting the Torque Convertor to the Drive Plate first..... then when the gearbox is pushed on, then tightened it stresses the Drive Plate...maybe even cracks it... also sometimes crushing the torque convertor.

What should happen is, when the gearbox is on the floor, put the torque convertor into the gearbox, turn the torque convertor until it goes into its "slot" then actually slides back. So when you put the gearbox into place the torque convertor is away from the drive plate. When the gearbox is all fastened up, tighten the torqure convertor bolts through the drive plate..

Leaving the bolts out is discusting like you say.

I think that's boo hockey!! I can understand them not giving out the owners details (as may be printed on invoices, etc) but the record of work done on a car should surely be available to the current owner!

Maybe they are aware of the shoddy workmanship, and are trying to cover their rears!!  ???

When I first joined OOF I changed my autobox on my driveway. The only info I had was Haynes book of lies and what I found on the forum. A bit of a pig to do, and those bolts at the top of the bellhousing are a pita, but for a presumably qualified mechanic in a fully equipped workshop with lifts etc. to do a job to that standard is beyond belief. >:(

Might be worth checking with Trading Standards, or whatever they call themselves these days, to see if this information can be obtained, as clearly the stealers are just protecting themselves.  :(

Putting the TC onto the box before fitting the box is pretty fundamental imo. Im sure even Haynes book of bollix says to do it that way. Someone who isnt aware of that should be making the tea and sweeping the floor. ::)

Yep, either that or the missing bellhousing bolts have left the gearbox inadequately supported and this has put stress on the driveplate. Either way, it was a very shabby mechanic who was there last. :(

Is there any sign of scoring on the torque converter nose? That might indicate if it has had the gearbox rammed back onto the TC.

Agreed. It is easy to not offer it up the whole way, then tighten up the bellhousing bolts and damage it, even if you do it the right way. When it's far enough on, it'll be rubbing on the bellhousing.
