Omega General Help / Re: Engine temp gauge
« on: 17 December 2013, 15:57:53 »
Thanks for the replies, no work done recently, though have not used the car for a couple of weeks and started a couple of times and then stalled with a flashing red spanner light, done that ever since I have had the car. Only seems to happen when been left standing and the battery is getting low, if battery is dead and you charge the battery no problems and when you use the car every few days again no issues. Can't see that effecting the gauge.

As for HBV where is that? I have no ramps the heater has been pants ever since I have had the car, once it gets below 5deg or so outside you get cold, crank the heater up to 28 and the fans get tiresome on continual high speed.

How easy is it to change the temp sender. is it buried in the V somewhere or easy to get to?

Omega General Help / Engine temp gauge
« on: 17 December 2013, 15:18:39 »
Took the car out today for a run and noticed the temp gauge barely moved off the bump stop, its always been lazy but has always moved towards the half way point. Heater, though hard to call it that, was blowing out its normal barely warm air even though the top and bottom heater hoses are too hot too keep your hand on so plenty of heat in the engine. Its a 2.6 just wondering if others have had this and can offer any advise.

Brilliant!! Thanks for that Andrew!!  :y :y :y

Your welcome, also forgot to say all cars registered on the public road in Japan are speed limited to 116 MPH, when you get the cars speedo coverted this will be removed. Caught with the limiter disabled in Japan they will impound your car for a first offence get caught again and they can impound and sell the car and you have no redress so they are not removed as a rule out of fear.

I have no idea why anyone would import a model from Japan that's also available in the uk.

It would need to be some sort of Japanese exotica you really want, to make it worth the extra cost. I thought there where company's that deal in grey imports that do all that crap for you? Which is where the profit is for them of course.

Chris you are correct, go for the stuff you cant get but can still get parts for. I am looking at the 2004 Legacy GT-B because we never got it, its got the 2.0 litre turbo under the lid from the Imprezza, also has the Pro Drive 5 speed button shift again we never got that until 2006 and then only in the 3.0 litre version. My last GTO was a MK4 very rare only made 700 of them for the JDM market from late 1998-1999 when the model finished, but parts no problem. Another car to consider is the Skyline 2003 onwards GT350 same parts as the Nissan 350Z, also for that car, UK never got the 7 speed auto box, Japan had that as virtually standard.

I have imported 3 cars from Japan, 2 x Mitsubishi GTO's and the best and quickest car I have every owned a 1997 Mitsubishi VR4 what a piece of kit that was, owned it for 4 years.

I have never used tradecarview, I have an account with idirect, http://www.idirect.co.jp never had a problem at all. Couple of things to remember, in Japan they change their cambelts on mileage, not age. My VR 4 had 45k kms on the clock when I got it and was on its original belt so budget for that. There are two main islands in Japan, the southern are temperate, they very rarely get ice and snow so these cars don't get the salt, however Japan is an island so cars that are owned on the coast suffer like they do here.

There are grades which are supplied with used cars:

Grade 1-5 is condition of body work 1 = Junk 5=like new I always buy a Grade 4
Condition interior A-C A = New C=Dirty and damaged
Underbody A-D = A = New D=Heavy corrosion

Companies like idirect look after all the paper work and import to Southampton or Bristol, I always go into Southampton, budget for a £50 paperwork fee at this end, Vat at 20% and import duty at 10% of total cost including shipping.

Conversion is straight forward, over 10 years old from first registration no SVA needed, at the docks is a company called SVA UK they will collect it if you want and do the speedo conversion and the fog light, they built my fog light into the rear light cluster very neat job.

Then you need to get the registration document from DVLA to register, not sure the number but you can get it from a post office no problem.

Fuel remember Japan cars are mostly tuned for Super Unleaded that means Tesco 99 or Shell V-Power.

Rust proofing is recommended but easy enough to do on a dry day and a ramp.

Some people say that cars from Japan are clocked, though this is true of some, Idirect warrant all their cars mileage, any issues you get a refund even if its been landed in the UK. Also I work for a Japanese Bank in the UK and the reason for the low mileages is that people commute by public transport more than we do also their road charges are horrendous, want to cross a bridge or use a tunnel that will be £25 please each way! Also their cities have congestion charges and car parking makes central London look bargain basement. They also never or hardly ever tow things, they don't do caravans and the like so very rare to find a tow bar fitted even to a 4x4.

I am also importing a Subaru next year, going for a 2004 GT-B estate never came to the UK so nice to have something a bit different. Good luck happy to answer any other questions you may have.

That's the good thing with these cars, good used parts are plentiful and keep viable cars on the road, fuel apart they are cheap barges to run. Hope you sort the box out for little cash.

I got this one, with a Blaupunkt SD MP3 BT head unit:

http://www.dabonwheels.co.uk/Acoustic_Solutions_DAB-ICS100_DAB_car_radio.html

If I had decided to keep the 2005 original head unit I would have purchased this one because it does MP3 and DAB.

http://www.dabonwheels.co.uk/Alpine_EZi-DAB_universal_DAB_car_radio.html

The aerial cost more than the unit and I replaced the GSM on the roof with a DAB one. I put the controller unit in the pull down compartment under the head light switch. Great reception Planet Rock mainly and thats why I purchased it, through Radio 2 excellent.

One last thing I notice its an auto. They cool through the bottom of the rad, the jackets split, 10 years is the max they will last, if the rad has not been changed in the last 5 years change it. If water gets into the box its toast in about 2 miles. The boxes have an external filter about £40.00 for a proper Mitsy, check the fluid there is a dipstick in the engine bay mine was on the right hand side, the fluid must be a nice red, the box holds about 8 ltrs and there is a drain plug so no dropping of sumps, do not use Dextron III it must be Diaqueen spec, or I think that is what it was called. I used Amsoil in mine fully synthetic, cost about £14.00 a ltr but about the best you can get. If gearbox is jerky and wont shift smoothly and those boxes are very smooth then its either old fluid burnt brown colour or the wrong fluid. I think all the radiators are the same for the 2.5 and the VR4 cost about £140.00 for a pattern part.

The VR4 had the 5 speed box all UK and export model Galants had the 4 speed auto. Only the GDi 2.4 got a 5 speed and that was only for the Japan domestic market never officially exported.

Hope my two posts help you, all the cars I have owned my Legnum was the best by far, everything worked right up to when I sold it. Every time I planted my foot I had a grin ear to ear, the 2.5 V6 would still do the same I am sure, very low end torque engine and loves to rev.

I owned the legnum VR4 for 4 years, Mitsy parts prices horrendous but you don't need many. Engine is a sweet thing with a soft smooth tick over, couldn't hear it in the car. Liked the fuel though not sure for the non turbo, also much preferred full fat super 99, most Jap cars do even if de-tuned for export markets, they normally leave the high octane maps in the ECU. Cambelt service every 5 years very expensive and an all day job £700+, when doing it change the camshaft oils seals or it all has to come off again, and they are actually not that expensive and only adds an extra 30 mins to the labour. Camskill may do non VR4 parts they were my preferred supplier.

I have missed the Legnum so much I am importing a Legacy GT next year, Mitsy don't make a Galant/legnum equivalent anymore unfortunately.

Check for rust wheel arches and underbody around fuel tank, mine was 10 years old when imported and came from southern japan so had never seen snow or salt it was like new, but the Japanese tend to only lightly underseal, I had it completely sealed as soon as it was put on the road. The real killer is the front suspension struts they are double skinned so don't show corrosion until they are rotted through from the outside and showing in the engine bay, if they are heavily rusted around the shock mount run a mile as its fit only for parts.

I have the same issue, low speeds right lock after turning the wheel more than 50% will check the steering box bolts, thanks for the heads up all.

Thanks both for the replies, I was hoping it would be a Tech 2 setting, it would have been a nice feature to save the lock solenoids unlocking and locking doors needlessly. Got two on mine on their last legs which got me thinking.

Omega General Help / Central Locking question
« on: 03 May 2013, 10:28:44 »

Hi all
On our Corsa C when you press the remote once only the drivers door unlocks, press it again and the other 3 doors unlock, on my Omega when you unlock the car all doors unlock, is there a setting that can be changed so that the system behaves the same as the Corsa by chance?

Thanks

I have the B4's with the Eibachs fitted to a CD and to be honest totally transformed the car. I had B4's put on the front before changing to the Eibach springs leaving the B4's in situ and adding same to the rear, so before the eibachs the front B4's definitely improved the ride and front control, fair value as well I thought.
