If I'm honest, I think its looking less and less likely. Can only happen if we both do it, and my neighbours future looks less certain then mine, so he may need to tighten his belt.

Which you need. As I'm sure Mrs TB will agree.

You need a double garage, as do I, in fact most of us do. This has to be the cheapest possible way to achieve more space. An opportunity not to be missed. It will cost more in the long run.

I remember discussions about extending it prior to. I don't recall Mr Neighbour being involved then...?

Anyway, its early days yet I guess? Getting a price and details on planning can't cost much?   ...or can it?

Double garage, yes. We all need that, to be able to work out of the rain. But a double simply isn't viable under any circumstance here.

Given I can't work on car in garage as its too narrow, not sure I can see the gain in length, now I actually come to weigh up the options.

Reality is I'll never get another bike, so thats a huge chunk of room freed up, that ZX10 was enormous.


If its just to make more space, well, I had a large shed behind the garage (when I had visions of parking the car in the garage), dont think you ever saw that. Obviously what happened was teh shed was filled with shite, and the garage was too  .  Now if I seperated the extended bit off and made a proper workshop with drills, lathes etc .

I've learnt the expensive way that its not worth picking up and stocking spares, so thats at least 2 of the shelving units I no longer need...

Now Mrs TB has finished college, she's started to sort out her crafty room, so that should take a lot of crap from kitchen, dining room and spare bedroom. I need to tidy my little room as well

The question I'd asked myself since the neighbour's job news is "what will I gain?"

I've dreamt about extending it for ages. But now when I ask the question, I can't answer it....

Its so much easier to work when there is space to move.

Given that odds suggest your not likely to have another "incident", and you'll have learned some safety aspects(I've still not put all my potions from the shelves into the metal cupboard btw ) I have no doubts a tidy garage collection will accumulate very quickly, and the parts will arrive weather they are wanted or not is my guess. They just do

In short, back to square one will arrive all too quickly if you don't, and the value/desirability of the house will be enhanced if you do.

If that were to happen, I'd just fill up the larger area with more crap. Back to square 1, only more skips reqd

As to house value, as it seriously eats in to garden area, and its a house likely to be bought by a growing family, not sure the larger garage v smaller garden would significantly impact value. Probably enough to get my money back.

Personally, from working on a car point of view, I think you gain from width, not length, especially for engine related work. I have a single garage but can't get down the side of the car to work on it once the nose is in. I could do with it being wider once inside the door just to allow you to manoeuvre. The problem with this is, as my mate found out, you have to be very careful jacking up just one side of the car when it is half in and half out, otherwise you end up with a crease in the car door where the garage door upright has dug in to it. 
The extra width would eat in to your garden though and Mrs TB wouldn't be too happy looking out of her kitchen window and seeing a wall.

Having google earthed you (yes I'm spying on you right now )It's not actually as big a gain in area as I thought.

Although, to me, its waisted currently, will get damp as its surrounded on 3 sides so poorly planned originally, so should be part of the garage, given your needs. Just fill it with useful stuff and not crap. Seeemples.
