Water "Adams ale"
« on: 28 August 2013, 01:55:27 »

... What type To mix with antifreeze. I have hard water from the mains and my waterbut doesn't have a filter I could use a cloth or something as a filter possibly  :-\..

I'm planning on getting this Antifreeze.... Unless there's a better offer available at the time of purchase.

Comma SLA5L 5L Super Red Antifreeze and Coolant Concentrated
http://amazon.co.uk/dp/B00544L3M6

Also, I'm I correct in thinking boiling water from the tap and let it cool is distilled water of good enough quality ?

I'm going to attempt this on the Omega soon especially before winter...

Thanks
 :)

Best is distilled water, de-ionised is close as far as I can tell (and not bad for the system as an old myth says).  Eurocar parts were doing 5l for £1.94 inc delivery last month! Boiled water is not much like distilled but better than tap. Unless you boil it dry and condense the steam in which case it is distilled water. Soft tap water is much better than hard, I think Welsh water is soft. Your 3.2 will take almost exactly 5l of antifreeze and 5l of water, well my 2.6 did anyway. Officially 9.7l for the manual, 9.5l for auto.

Still £1.94 from EuroCarParts... CarPlan brand as well..

There's always pre-mixed coolant if you're unsure, although it works out a lot more expensive thanks using concentrated.

I wouldn't have thought it would matter much if you use a 50/50 mixture. The additives in the antifreeze will go a long way towards neutralising anything nasty in the water, then again, if you can get distilled water cheap enough, why not? Rain water from the water butt would be the next bet followed by tap water. Boiling it probably won't remove much hardness, so I wouldn't bother.

water hardness map http://www.bristan.com/watermap although take with a pinch of salt as true sofidioter is only available in a few isolated spots.

When my Head Gasket failed I was a bit shocked at how much limescale there was in the Block waterways. I always use De-Ionised water too but my saloon had not been looked after in the years before I got her and it's not beyond the bounds of credibility that there may be a link between the scale build-up and eventual HG failure :-\

£1.94 for 5L delivered isn't too bad then from EuroCarParts De-Ionised  :-\ .. I'd have to buy 10-15L of the stuff enough for flushing also ?

If you're changing the water pump, I'd flush with a hose until the water runs clear, then remove the pump and allow the block to drain. I wouldn't bother with deionised water if not changing the pump, as it'll be half full of tap water before you add any coolant, and you'd have to flush with a ton of deionised water to change that.

Just installed a rainwater capture system in my garage, actually. Pumped up to a header tank in the roof space so I can feed my pressure washer from it. :y

Water pump isn't due and sounds fine, Who'd think it would be this complicated to chose between water types  :o

Simplest thing to do would be to filter the water from the waterbut and the cheapest option.
