......
I would wager more people are still furloughed or otherwise underemployed in the UK than have died from TCV in Europe . In fact, there's between 1.1 and 1.6 million people still furloughed, which makes me fairly insignificant in the scheme of things.

furlough pay is a safety net to give people money to eat, pay rent etc because their sector of the economy is shut to stop the virus spreading .

had everything remained open and no restrictions had been put in place then thousands more people would have died .

it's NOT a payment just to stop the furloughed person catching covid  ::)
so the comparison between the number of people still on furlough and the number of people who "have died from TCV in Europe" is not comparable  ???

........  my being furloughed makes about as much difference to anything as Dave hiding under the mattress.
I've not hid under the mattress  :)
BUT .
I've worn a face mask since before the first lockdown in enclosed spaces ,shops ,people's houses when doing jobs etc
used hand sanitizer and disinfectant ,lots and lots of disinfectant , and stayed away from people as much as possible .

I have taken the pandemic seriously and taken precautions to protect myself and others .

had everyone done the same and not dismissed a global pandemic as " a cold" ,we wouldn't be in such a mess  ::)

I agree we need to be careful of course, but… the ramifications of the COVID has meant that many many people have suffered terrible illnesses that could have been cured such as cancer for one because NHS is too busy with COVID. All pandemics are serious and frightening as it is the unknown which we fear most. Patients now know that unless you have COVID you have little chance of getting the treatment you need to survive. Obviously it can’t be left to just propagate but IMO there needs to be some sort of relief for the people who are suffering illnesses at least as bad as COVID as well as sadly they are definitely not getting the treatment they had before this lot. There were lots of the so called nightingale hospitals available maybe it would be best to treat COVID there as said earlier. I’m totally aware there’s no easy solution we’re all fu(^ked.

I agree  :)
sadly there are not enough staff ,nurses and doctors to staff nightingale hospitals ,that would be a great solution if there was  :)
It takes years to train people , we don't have enough staff to cope with the hospital workload even without Covid  :(

I have relatives who need hospital treatment ,I've had friends die of covid  :(

I hope we can keep covid cases down ,so non covid patients get seen .

simple things like Hands (washing/sanitizing), face (mask) and space (give strangers a wide birth) reduce infection .

the pandemic is not over , simple ,free measures can save lives ,even now

I know what furlough pay is for, the financial cost of shutting down whole industries far outweighs the benefits.

As for the rest, we'll never know...

I am grateful not to live in Australia though. The way the government in Victoria is carrying on, you'd think the air was made of mustard gas. This whole thing has turned into political fear mongering and an excuse to try and control people.

$50,000 - $129,000 as you asked.
No, he asked how much a few hundred thousand lives were worth. At $50,000, that's $223.5 billion for the 4,271,371 people who've died worldwide, or $551 billion @ $129,000 per life.

Do you think that is a fair price ?

Also, That's American lives  :P

and, based on what an insurance company(not known for parting with money if they can wiggle out of it) would begrudgingly pay out for one year of "quality life".
people tend to be dead for longer than 1 year  ::)

Can't you get British T'internet  :D

I imagine only the selfish pr**ks and sociopaths of this world would sell their granny for £36k

I know, although I didn't mention it as I didn't want to make it sound like the be all and end all.

But as you mention it, the net cost to the global economy in 2020 was $1.06 Trillion (4.5% of global GDP minus 3.3% growth, ie 1.2% of $88 Trillion), so you could say that we have overpaid by a factor of 2. :-X

So if you ask if it was worth it, statistically and economically, the answer has to be no, probably not.

And all this talk of death ignores the fact that the population has INCREASED by 80,000,000 in the last year inspite of everything.

We're worse than rabbits and plastic bags. So as a planet, could we do with losing a couple of billion people? It probably wouldn't hurt.
