High Level Satellite Install
« on: 08 July 2010, 08:56:27 »

Has anyone ever had a dish installed on top of a block of flats? Turns out the building my flat is in does not have a communal dish. Well flats were built in 1935!

So looking to get a dish installed on the roof, flat hope to get is on floor 5 of 6. So dish needs to be installed, and wires dropped down one floor.

Had quote of £120+vat so far  :-/

Currently making enquires about access to the roof, should not be an issue as there are a couple of mobile phone masts on roof currently.

I'll be providing the dish & LNB, but just wondering what to budget for?

Sadly I can't get it free, as non-standard installs are subcontracted out for H&S mumbo jumbo rules  :(

Why not talk to the rest of the residents and see if they're interested in a communal dish? IIRCC Sky say they'll install them for free on the website :y

Speaking of Sky dishes... We may need to talk as I need a new one ::)

Ahh that they do, but its 'standard' install thats free. Anything higher than second floor and they get scared  :(

Anything about this, its contracted out, costs not covered under my staff account  :( - Even if it costs me £150-£200, i'll make it back very quickly as the package i get is worth about £90 a month  :o

Its possible they might want a communal dish, but thats going to take time. Turns out, that I will be a share holder in the management company that owns the freehold with this purchase of the flat, so i should (and seller) have slightly more poke being allowed access to the roof.

Get an Octo LNB dish. I bought this one a couple of weeks ago (though I have yet to put it up). Good seller. Free P&P and arrived in less than 24 hours. Also comes with cables.

You can also buy a pole adaptor for about £3 if you don't have a wall to take the bracket. :y

Shame about the dishes... Need a Zone 2 Dish and Octo LNB... Looks like I'll have to spend the £70 odd and buy them ::)

These zone2 dishes...they are just bigger, and still work in zone 1 dont they?

tempted to replace ours with one to try and get a more reliable signal when the weather is a tad inclement.

Yep. The engineer who came to me (not a Sky one I might add) said it will aid in improving signal due to the trees where I am :y

Said that normally if you';ve got 40% (for example) then it will roughly double :y

Had it been a Sky engineer I'd probably have talked him into it for a drink ::) ::)

As it was, the guy who came out not only didn't have a zone 2 dish but would have had to account for it all anyway :'(

Can you have it wall mounted instead? I know it's probably still High Access but at least you can get it done ;)

Someone had a pikey install with a dish pointing out window, but because building is quite old, they won't allow dishes mounted externally at-all it seems  :(

Our block of flats Tunnie has a communial dish, which means we already have Sky connections to tie into, but a local "approved" outfit must do the work to connect, no one else! ::) ::)  In the past they quoted me £35 for that connection.

As already said, I would enquire as to whether or not other tenants / owners would share in the costs of a communial dish that the blocks managing agents will accept can be installed. ;) ;)
