Would you rather it was just a mosh pit where simply the strongest survives?

I know that there are quite a few on here that are making their absenses longer and longer between postings.....

good question..

nope.. but as  I said earlier this form is not immune to real life problems, will reflect it in some way  :-/ :-/

To add to my earlier posting on this thread:

Yes, there is one thing now bugging me, and I know others, about how over sanitization of our posts is taking place.  Tonight I have had at least one taste of this again.

Someone made a very unfortunate comment about a question I asked.  Other members stepped in to express dissatisfaction with that member comment to me.  I thanked them, and made a very polite observation on what had been said.  Suddenly the Admins step in, express anger about everyones involvement, and delete all the posts as though we as adults cannot handle it.

That very rarely happened in the past , but now censorship on here is common.  Why so much?  OR Admins is it just me? ::) ::) ::) ::) ;) ;)
If this was specifically about Albs thread, it came across to me as overly aggressive (from all sides).  Such aggression will stop some people making their points, and is ultimately bad for the forum.

But this thread is not about specifics

No, certainly not of course Ht. ;) ;)

But are we being too sensitive on here as is the rest of society? :-/ :-/ :-/  Are we witnessing too much protection? :-/ :-/

We reap what we sow.

General society now requires that we are understanding of creed, colour, religion and sexual persuasion.  It was only a matter of time before OOF had to fall into line because of the shouted demands of the few.

No longer can we have jokes about the Englishman, Irishman & Scotsman or the Protestant, Catholic and Jew or fat, short & tall or whatever because someone always complains....

There should be no need for either IMHO .. I'll just quote myself from earlier in the thread .. and it directly applies to the climate change thread comments IMHO ..

Quote
One persons "banter" is another persons "insult" .. it used to be (IMHO) that if you didn't like what someone posted, you just ignored it .. bit like walking away from a drunk in a pub .... now it seems that if something isn't "liked" by an individual it turns into a slanging match, followed by intervention by Admins to try and hold things together.

Tolerance of opinion, acceptance of difference, and the willingness to see what was intended to be written, all seem to have gone.

We now have entrenched arguments, bickering over the same points many times, and every thing taken at its most literal.

Folks seem to have forgotton that with freedom (of speech in this case) comes responsibility... mind you .. the word "responsibility" seems to be lacking in many areas .. not just this forum ... :(

(

Covers 99% of all the present problems IMHO ... seems the words

tolerance, understanding, responsibility have been deleted from the English language .  :(

I would add that jokes are inherantly dangerous.  Someone is always the butt of the joke and its the tolerance/understanding of that which is the problem.

As always, the Devil is in the detail...

Yep Entwood :y :y :y.  I agree with all you say, and Ht's along with TB's comments above also ring very true.

Can we all change for the better on here though?  I will certainly try, whilst not wishing to "water down" my writings :D :D :D ;)

I am starting to get into the MB owners UK but this forum is better by a long way.  I don't post often (just my character) but I still lurk on a fairly regular basis.

I'm interested to hear what Daz thinks. Clearly it's changed for the worse for him. I wonder if he see's a reason for it...?

On the subject of meets, I'd love to meet some of the characters on here, but I hesitated to go to Newent this year, as I didn't know whether I would have felt comfortable with a group of people that know each other so well. Maybe this puts other newer members off? There's no doubt that I would have been made welcome, even though I'm not that well known on here, but I'm quite quiet so Daz, I'll try and make the effort next time  :-[
I've been here a while and prefer to observe than post a great deal. I personally think the forum's as good as when I first joined though. It serves its primary purpose, which is to provide help and advice for the Omega, better than any other, as we all know.
As for the rest of it, I think the discussion area is still great, I happen to love the jokes and I loved it when Nickbat revived the Nag's Head as well  :y

My own view, without saying too much, is we are in the winter blues - not dissimilar to last year.  Once the meets start up again, things normally perk up.

I would sincerely urge those regulars who choose not to go to OOF meets (either local day meets, or the big 2 natinal ones) to seriously consider turning up - even if its just for the day.  I think communities work so much better when you know who you are talking to, rather than in the virtual world.

I, as the OP in the thread in question requested that it be trimmed. It was about someone who was a bit of a hero to me and quickly descended into something else (unpleasant) entirely.
As I said in my request to H21 - iF a thread such as that can descend as quickly as it did into something unpleasant, it makes me wonder if the forum is more broken than we thought, and ponder whether it is actually worth bothering. :(

Thanks Albs for explaining that, much appreciated! :y :y :y :y

It certainly puts the issue in another light, and I agree with your comments, especially about how a 'simple' thread as we were on can descend into the murky depths so quickly!! :o :o :o :o :o :o ;)

Very true, didn't used to agree, but your right. Bit like driving, would probably behave differently if I knew my friends family neighbours, colleagues and general aquaintances where watching.

But there is more to it IMO, without really knowing what exactly. :-/

My personal tuppenceworth and not that of an admin.  Timelines of matters of fact may be out of kilter, but the gist is there.

Society in general has changed such that even the quietest of minorities can and do make themselves heard to the extent that the greater good of society changes to accomodate their thoughts and wishes.

OOF originally was a WYSIWYG - what you see is what you get - forum with little or no moderation, simply because none was required.  It was about Omegas, how to repair them cheaply and not pay full dealer or garage prices.  Such was the ability to share such information via howtoo's and clever folks keen to be online and impart information, freely and at no cost, the forum grew.

There was a demand for an area where anything could be discussed, hence the gendiss area.  Again, common sense prevailed and the assorted adults (note 'adults') were able to have a laugh and share jokes and banter at The Nags Head.  Look back the old threads and see whats meant.

There were a few very good meets, including a tour round Drax power station courtesy of member miked, and the cameraderie simply grew thereafter.

The Omega got older and less mainstream and its availability to those of us with lesser means became more and more.  The forum started to reflect that.

What was initially a relatively small group of enthusiasts quickly became a larger mass of folks wanting to run large expensive, well specced cars on the cheap.  With that came a degree of political correctness and some upsets and tears at some of the good natured banter and repartee.

The well learned maxim that religion and politics should not be discussed in a pub with friends was quickly forgotten and such things soon became common place.

As the years continued to turn, so did the mindset of the membership, in my opinion.  Gone was the happy understanding that jokes and banter were that and umbrage was taken by some, thus the 'alert mod' option was introduced and with that, came what can be perceived as moderator intervention overload.

As I said earlier elsewhere, we reap what we sow.

If you take the huff about something without having some consideration for others folks standpoint - be that PC or very non PC - and simply 'tell teacher', what do you expect to be the outcome?

OOF is publicly accountable on so many various levels, be that technical, copywrite or some of the PC guff as I outlined, so you have to get what you asked for, within reason.

As said, my tuppenceworth as OOFer and not an admin.  Those who have met me in person know that I call a spade a spade and can cuss and blind with the best of them but those that simply launch large on the forum and do not take the very small step to make a meet to show themselves face to face?  Ach well, we all need keyboard warriors, I suppose.

If this is a rant, well, I suppose thats now /end rant...

Thanks for reading thus far....
