Top speed of a 2.5 V6 auto?
« on: 12 July 2010, 16:36:21 »

Without sounding like a spotty 17 year old.... how fast will a 2.5 V6 automatic go?

Naturally I don't condone speeding on UK roads.... but my 1997 2.5 V6 hit 135mph... and I reckon there might have been a bit more there... only I ran out of road .... I mean 'Autobahn'  :y

When you have the sporty button on and its running well.... what a fantastic car the Omega is

A real bargain for just £500!!!

I think you probably found the point where it starts really running out of steam.  I think top speed is quoted around 140.

The larger engined ones do seem to have more go, and 140 is fairly quick and easy.  3.0l top speed quoted around 150.

My old (chipped) TD never went beyond 125, always due to other circumstances, as still pulling hard. Suspect it would, given time, approach another 10mph. Quoted top speed (unchipped) around 120mph iirc.

Sadly, mine having some poxy speed limiter fitted, I only managed a run of nudging 100 (on suitable race track of course) before I got pee'd off with dipping the throttle at the required points to override it... (85, 90, 95, 97, 100), but had loads more left....

Some-one told me that the 3.0 autos don't change into fourth gear until 110 m.p.h. The same person told me he'd been in one that was driven at 155

Driven hard, a retail spec 3.0l auto will pop into 4th at a shade under 130mph.

These are some of the quoted figures from VX for the facelift models;
2.6 auto saloon, 139 mph. Manual version will do 142 mph
3.2 auto saloon will do 149 mph
And the 2.2 DTI saloon will do 121 mph.

Here's one I haven't tried.

Sport Mode locks out OverDrive yeah?  So, bearing in mind The Omega will hit 130 in 3rd, will it turn Sport Mode off by itself it you try to go beyond 130ish MPH, or will it bounce off the limiter?

Some gearbox firmware versions do lock out top in sport.  v9 on a GS820 TCM doesn't. Apparently ::)

I'm going to have to find a long stretch of motorway runway and find out.  :-X

I've had another word with my Mate and he says that he was in sports mode when it changed into 4th. at 110... he didn't notice if the light went off!

The Senator's hand book used to say that in Sports mode the car would go into 4th at 127mph. My Omega hand book doesn't have the same info.

Just looked at the 4.2 diff thread that chris started and worked out the speed  per 1000 rpm in all gears, interesting are the numbers if the V6 could hold on till 7000rpm.

            7.80               12.70       18.80       26.00

1000            7.80              12.70       18.80       26.00
2000            15.60       25.40       37.60       52.00
3000            23.40       38.10       56.40       78.00
4000            31.20       50.80       75.20       104.00
5000            39.00       63.50       94.00       130.00
6000            46.80       76.20       112.80      156.00
7000            54.60       88.90       131.60       182.00

Seen 120 in 3rd on my 2.5 auto and it was confirmed by a T5 police roofbox @118mph

But not sure how the gearing differs on 2.5 compaired to a 3.2.

Also cant remember the change point in sport mode, think it's only 5500 on mine.

Never maxed the 3.0 Elite in 3rd. Was scary enough when I was confirmed at doing 118mph on what I thought was a private test track at 3am, never ventured above 100mph since.  ::)
