More airbag weirdness.
« on: 21 May 2010, 09:27:24 »

Been fighting by drivers side airbag for years now....

resistance sits at 2-3 ohms, then creeps up over a month to 6 ohms, and puts the light one.

I normally remove the seatback, reseat the connector, sometimes using switch cleaner, reassemble and jobs a goodun. (once I reset with "My Naff Code Reader")

I have carried out the TIS Instructions to remove the connector at the side of the seat from the equation.

I have swapped the airbag with a different one.

Ive bent the pins in the connector to ensure a tighter fit.

My common sense (may be misplaced) tells me, that if playing with the connector to the airbag itself fixes this issue, then that must be where the fault lies.

The latest weird one was I checked the resistance earlier in the week, was 6, did it again last night before taking the seat apart, and it was back to 2!

What on earth is causing this?

Should I try another airbag? (reluctant to 'borrow' one from her car as that is working fine, and £1 to 1p once I meddle it will never be the same again.
Should I replace the wiring from airbag to side of seat?
Or shall I just keep fixing on fail....the car has limited life left now anyway.

Guess I would just love to know whats causing the variation in resistance.

could be worth a try, where is it?  knowing my luck i'd swap it and BANG as the all explode  ;D ;D ;D

Could be, as would expect wiggling the connector to alter resistance, but it doesnt, it seems to be the removing and adding of the bag that fixes it, (exceppting the last self fixing fault)

under rear passenger face vents - need to remove centre console I believe.

If its the same as yours, I have one from a 2000 facelift here ::)

Another test - if you discon battery, reconnec after an hour of so, does resistance reading drop?

not tried measuring before and after battery removal.

If the discon/recon batt drops the resistance back, might be worth doing it.  About 20mins to remove the console, so not massive work...

Why would you want/need to remove stereo?  Its the bit along the tunnel that needs to come off...

How are you measuring the resistance?

I know what you mean .........

Got a "new" '99 3.0 Elite a few weeks ago - so far have done ......

Waterpump
Cambelt kit
Aux tensioner & belt
Changed oil/filter
Removed SAI system
Blanked off EGR
Cam covers
Spark plugs
Air, pollen & fuel filters
Breathers
Exhaust from cats back
Front wheel bearings
Front discs/pads
Steering idler
4 new tyres

Have still got a fair bit more to do, but reckon its worth it as its only got 74k on the clock ......

SWMBO recons I'm bonkers ........

aye, its the what have you got to do on the next one...

the engine is so sweet, even approaching 140k, after Marks HG etc work, it really does drive beautifully.

Its one of those cars I am unreasonably attached too, just can't see past those jobs, the oil leak especially, cam cover done 3 times, and still has a very intermittant leak somewhere, leaks and smokes like hell, then nothing for weeks.  I dunno, fed up with it.  been battling that airbag issue for 3 years.  Very, very sorry to say it, but I think the end is coming.  :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

I did cam covers for the first time ever last week - have to do then again as have leak on LH bank.

Probably dislodged something when putting the cover back  :'(

Mind you, she started 1st time after all the engine work - I was gobsmacked I can tell you!
