Omega General Help / What to do with my Omega?
« on: 16 August 2014, 17:07:28 »
So having been an Omega owner for the past 8 years and having driven them professionally when they first came out, it is now time to say goodbye. I am in the happy position that for the first time in my life I am in the position to have a brand new car, and with my son working for JLR and bringing in a hefty 20% discount the Omega Estate is going to be replaced by an XF Sportbrake.  :D

But I was devastated when the dealership only offered £200 px for the Omega (less than the £205 webuyanycar were offering). I could get £250 by weighing it in!  The car is due an MOT in a couple of weeks and will probably need tyres, exhaust and possibly new discs on the front - I can do all this but it will cost much more than the car is worth and then I will have the faff of advertising and selling it privately.

So what should I do?  Scrap it, MOT & sell privately, wait for one of the breakers on here to make me a reasonable offer? It's still in lovely condition, has 96000 miles and drives perfectly...  :(

Omega General Help / Autobox Gear Selector Switch
« on: 31 January 2013, 20:13:18 »
Evening all,

So it seems that my Omega has reached that point in its life where the gear indicator LEDs do the whole disco thing and the gearbox keeps clunking and dropping into limp mode. When in 'Drive' all the LEDs are lit, but they do run up and down like Knight Rider from time to time! This all started about a couple of weeks ago when the roads were thick with snow and slush ... I suspect that the switch housing just got swamped with crud. :-\

I have read the maintenance guide and looked at the photos and to be fair it all sounds simple enough, but Haynes turns the whole job into a real headache: exhaust off, gearbox lowered, cross member removed etc... Is this really necessary or will I be able to access the switch and the fittings without removing all of this? ???

I am hoping that a thorough clean is going to be all it needs, but I may have to source a replacement.  Anyone got a decent one out there?  Oh and I have read the codes: 0700, 0705 and 1700 which all seem to point to a knackered switch.

Any advice - anyone done this job?  Car is a 2.2 petrol estate. Ta very much. :y

*** Mods please move to 'Wanted' Section*** :y

I'm after an estate roof aerial base and genuine VX whip aerial to match ... must be amplified and have the multiplug intact. The rubber seals on the base can rot a bit, so a decent one would be preferable.

Anyone help?

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Another aerial question
« on: 08 January 2012, 14:12:01 »
I have the usual roof mount aerial on my CDX estate and the CCR 2006 unit.  Having fitted an Elite tailgate spoiler I now need to purchase the Prodrive aerial ball adapter to incline the original aerial away from the spoiler or, perhaps, ditch the Vx aerial and fit something like this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BLACK-SHARK-FIN-CAR-ANTENNA-AERIAL-VAUXHALL-ASTRA-OMEGA-/350128295143?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item518545cce7#ht_4282wt_1011

Question is, does anyone know whether the standard aerial is amplified, and what sort of fitting/connection is there under the roof lining. Anyone fitted something like this already and have any advice?

Ok folks, I'm having a bit of trouble making my mind up about front bumpers. The original CDX bumper had lost its gloss and the surface was breaking up quite badly:

Probably had a dodgy respray after this repair:

So this is the MV6:

And the CDX:

Which would you go with? ???

General Discussion Area / "No water car wash products"
« on: 25 October 2011, 09:07:42 »
Has anyone tried one of those "no water" products like 'Body Shield Pro' or 'Mantis Instant Shine'?  I've seen the infomercials, but frankly I wouldn't want to use one of these to clean a dirty car. Firstly I'd be concerned about potentially scratching the surface with a rogue spec of grit (despite what they say) and secondly for the price of a bottle it wouldn't last long!

I was thinking of using this after washing the dirt from the car and after the watermarks had dried. Less hassle perhaps than a chammy followed by a layer of polish??...

Anyone tried it?

Just noticed that I am missing the driver's side piece of trim in the lower bumper section of my 2003 CDX.

The passenger side looks like this:

Has anyone got the driver's side trim?? Apologies for posting this in General Help .. hopefully a nice kind moderator will move it to 'wanted' for me?

Also need one of the metal spring clips for retaining the headlight washers??

Omega General Help / Sunroof not closing
« on: 28 September 2011, 08:35:35 »
I'm finding that my sunroof doesn't always close properly - it will close to within a couple of inches then reverse and go back another couple of inches. This sounds like the sensor mechanism reacting to some sort of blockage / stiffness ... I have cleaned and lubricated all around the tracks and can't see anything untoward. I've also reset the sunroof in all positions. (2003 CDX)

The roof will close fully however if the switch is pressed in and held. It closes fine when it's been in a tilt position. I've seen the excellent guide on here for cleaning the switch, but I'm wondering if anyone else has come across this one and has a solution before I start taking it to bits!

Omega Gallery / One of the last ...
« on: 25 September 2011, 19:31:41 »
Didn't think I would have another omega after my 2.0 CD started heading downhill... until I found this little beauty: 57k CDX with a full Vx service history, and the highest Spec Omega I've had. Good for a few more years! Alloys have got to go though; the tyres are good but they are only 205s when they should be 255s. Thanks to Gooseman I've got a set of 5 spokes on the way. And I think given the black paint that the grill may have to be swapped for a mesh or Irmscher type.  Could also really do with an Elite tailgate spoiler to finish it off... anyone got one? ???

Omega General Help / Idle too high?
« on: 21 May 2011, 15:09:50 »
Ok. Moving on from the intermittent stalling and fluctuating idle I have now cleaned all breathers, Idle valve, throttle body, inlet manifold, cleared breather jet, removed cam cover, de-gunked and replaced everything with new gaskets. The original fault was probably caused by the 3" split in the air intake duct between the air flow meter and the throttle body!  That's taped up pending arrival of a replacement duct (£20).

However.

Engine started immediately and is running smoothly. Only problem is that it is idling now at about 1000 rpm when it was previously about 750?  When in park after a few seconds it does settle down again to this figure, but when in drive and stopping at junctions etc it is staying around 1000. I have checked that there is sufficient slack in the accelerator cable and the throttle valve is returning to its idle stop.

Any ideas?

Omega General Help / Paper Clip test won't work?
« on: 17 May 2011, 18:06:59 »
Hi folks. My 2.0 16v Ecotec omega has developed an annoying fault where it can suddenly lose revs, or (as of this morning) cut out completely whist driving along and taking several attempts to restart.

I have successfully used the paperclip test in the past to diagnose a faulty cam sensor but for some reason it won't work any more. I have tried various 'grades' of paperclip and followed the guide to the letter, but no flashing after the engine light goes out.  so...

Any idea what the fault may be?

Any idea why the PC test won't work?

The cam sensor was a genuine VX siemens - I'm wondering about a crank sensor on the way out (it is the original one and now on 120K).

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Omega General Help / More temperature gauge problems
« on: 10 February 2009, 18:41:07 »
Hi all.  I had a problem a couple of weeks ago when my trip computer display started showing temperatures of -35 to -40. Now it's been cold, but not that cold.

Simple fix was to replace the external temp sensor in the lower grill, which fixed the problem fine. (And only cost £9.20). That worked for a couple of weeks, but this week the display started showing -35 again.  The it stopped showing the actual temperature and displayed the letter 'F' instead, which I assume means 'Fault'.

Today I replaced the sensor with another brand new unit. Whereas last time the temperature came up immediately, this time it won't budge from 'F'. I have checked the condition of the wiring, and made sure the connectors were dry but still no temp displayed.  Normally I would ignore something as trivial as this but since the aircon won't work below -4 degrees and the car thinks it's -40 I have a problem. I have studied the wiring diagram but can't see anything obvious. The characters in the display work perfectly in all other modes.  I have tried disconnecting the battery and re-setting everything but it still comes up 'F'.  I think I know what the 'F' really stands for now.

Anyone got any suggestions as to how to fix this?

Omega General Help / 2.0 16v Ecotec cutting out
« on: 18 September 2010, 08:29:00 »
Hi folks.  I have had a problem a few times with the engine cutting out whilst I have been driving. The only warning I get is a momentary deflection of the rev counter needle up high, then it dies.  Once the car is stopped I can turn off the ignition and the engine will immediately restart as if nothing is wrong. I can then continue to drive (sometimes for a few days), before it happens again.

The first time it happened I got the engine management warning light illuminated but it disappeared the next time I drove it. The engine has cut four times in the last three days but I don't get a warning light or any message on the computer display.  A friend at work has a Sealy code reader but this wasn't showing any codes.

Sounds like a failing camshaft sensor to me?  I replaced this about 5 years ago with the upgraded GM one (that had to be spliced into the loom).  Will do the paperclip test this morning and post the codes (if it shows any).

Any theories?
