Omega General Help / Headlights
« on: 27 November 2007, 22:27:47 »
Is it me or are Omega headlights really poor??? :-?

I drove SWMBO's Y reg Polo the other night and this just highlighted how bad my Omega headlights are - I actually think they are quite dangerous especially when oncoming traffic is coming it is really difficult to make out your side of the road.  My previous Carlton headlights were bad, but these seem much worse!! >:(

Any suggestions??

My Omega is 2002 CD Saloon non-Xenons.

Can anyone tell me what the classic early symptoms are of a failing cam sensor on a 2.2i petrol?

Thanx in advance!

Omega General Help / 2.2i petrol - need a new CAT! (Miaow!)
« on: 22 August 2007, 20:53:44 »
Had it confirmed today on good authority that my cat is breaking up!! (as I suspected) >:(

I am convinced that this has been caused by driving through recent floodwaters, the water cooling the outer casing quickly hence 'crushing' the outer edge of the expanded ceramic monolith causing fracture!! :( :(

So, a couple of questions before I get it fixed:

1)  Am I best to get a genuine GM replacement OR is a pattern equivalent as good (these seem to range from about £100+ VAT on the net).  If the GM original is the way to go, how much are these on TC?

2)  Could I use a secondhand one off a scrapper (which would save me money) or is this false economy?  I have been on the www.breakeryard.com and registered my details and I have been offered on for £100+ VAT.  I have also been offered one from this guy for £65 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140147347080&sspagename=ADME:X:RTQ:UK:11

3)  Is the cat part of the front pipe or is it a separate bit?  The bloke at ATS seemed think that it came 'all in one' as part of the downpipe.

4) Is there a difference between the one fitted to Y22XE and Z22XE (mine is Z22XE)?

Any advice/help would be greatly received!! ;D

Thanx

Omega General Help / Rattle on start up - 2.2i
« on: 19 August 2007, 14:13:33 »
Started up my Omega this morning and was greeted by a horrible rattling from underneath (sounded like marbles rattling in a tin!!) >:

Quick scrabble on the floor and it sounds like it is coming from the middle section of the exhaust, near the cat.  Exhaust still looks good and from what I can see.

The noise disappeared once the car was warm.  I am hoping that this in not the cat!! >:(

Any ideas anyone???

Omega General Help / Wheel Balancing
« on: 25 June 2007, 22:55:56 »
Just a quick one about wheel balancing

Should the tyres be warm or cold prior to balancing (or does it not matter either way).

I had mine balanced a couple of months ago on my Omega, but I travelled about 10 miles to the place to have them done (hence tyres would be warm) but still feel out of balance especially when cold (first five miles).  Any ideas??

Thanx :y

Omega General Help / Changing front pads - Lucas Calipers
« on: 21 May 2007, 21:16:01 »
Just a quickie! ;)

I am planning to change the front pads on my 2002 2.2i CD - already bought pads from my local dealer.  Never changes pads on the Meega before and not got a workshop manual, so can anybody give me a quick 'run-down' and what size sockets/torx/allen drives I need?

They are Lucas calipers by the way!

Thanx in advance!! :y

Omega General Help / 2.2i - couple of queries
« on: 11 May 2007, 22:46:45 »
After owning my Omega for several months now and being a member of this superb site for the same period, I have been reading (and learning!) about some of the common 'quirks' that these cars have, and also the excellent advice and support from fellow members!!  There is just a couple of queries I have which I am sure you guys can answer!!

1)  The 2.2 has a 'drive by wire' (DBW).  There is an excellent 'how to' section on how to clean out the DBW throttle body etc.  What are the symptoms of this needing cleaning (i.e. poor idling etc)?  What age/mileage should this be cleaned out?

2)  Auto gearbox upgrade - I am aware that an upgrade is available (version 9?) and that 'The Boy' offers an upgrade service for members.  Unfortunately, I live 100+ miles away from TB, so my question is, is this something usually only vx dealers usually do (and how much does this cost) or do some GOOD independent garages provide this service ??

Thanks in advance for your help!! ;D ;D

Omega General Help / Central Locking 02 Omega
« on: 18 March 2007, 21:44:59 »
Hi all

Just recently bought a 2002 2.2i CD Saloon and the central locking on the passenger front door was 'lazy' (i.e. would not fully raise or lower the button when locking/unlocking), however now it does NOT work at ALL!!! >:( >:(

I want to know if this is a common fault and is it an easy fix (i.e a few squirts of WD) or whether I need a new solenoid?

Obviously I will need to remove the door panel - what is the best way to remove it without causing much cursing and swearing!! (and possible damage!!)

Cheers :)

Newbie Welcome Area / New member with 2002 2.2iCD Auto
« on: 18 March 2007, 21:09:02 »
Hi  ;D

Just want to say hello to everyone - recently bought my first Omega after three Carlton's (had for about six weeks now!).  Great motor - really LOW genuine mileage of 24k (done 26k now!).  It is a 2002 '02' 2.2i CD Auto Saloon finished (I think) in Samura Blue.

I have a couple of issues I need advice if you can help!!  (I'll post these on 'General Help').

Oh, I live in Worksop, Notts.

All for now!!

General Discussion Area / Saab 9-5's.  Any good??
« on: 30 October 2007, 21:39:18 »
Probably NOT the best place to ask this question, BUT are Saab 9-5's any good??  I have never been really happy with my Omega as there just seems to be 'one thing after another' with it.  Latest thing with it sounds (and feels) a bit rough when cold.  Done all the usual on the 2.2 (i.e. throttle body, breathers etc), well serviced/maintained.  Shame as I really like the look of the car!

I know the Saab has FWD which does put me off a bit AND the prices of parts/servicing etc.  I do like the RWD - especially on a big motor as I have always had a large RWD (i.e Granada Mk1's, Carltons (x3) etc) other wise it is a Beemer and I REALLY DON'T want to own one of those!!!

Any comments/advise greatly received!! ;D

Thanx

General Discussion Area / 2.2i Auto performance
« on: 21 June 2007, 22:14:41 »
Hi all :)

Owned my 2002 Meega 2.2i CD Auto Saloon for almost three months now and covered 6k (bought with 24k on clock, now reading 30k).

The 6k I have covered has been mixed mainly between town and country driving (as my 16 mile trip to work is) although I have not yet took it on a really long run to give it a good 'blow' out (that will come in a couple of weeks on our holiday trip down to the Isle of Wight).  After covering the mileage I have done and being driven in various situations/conditions, I must admit that I feel a bit disappointed with the overall performance.

I have never thought that the engine is particularly 'smooth' especially when cold, even after a good service with GM parts at 26k (including plugs, fuel filter, air filter, oil etc), but just put that down to the 'characteristic' of 16v engines? (my previous cars have always been 8v).

For 144bhp, I don't feel that mine is very responsive and is certainly doesn't feel any faster than my previous 1993 Carlton 2.0i Auto (which had covered 150k and 'only' 115bhp with the C20NE lump), although it does have more torque than the Carlton.  Mid range is also lacking (even in 'sport' mode) which I have especially noticed when overtaking as I feel that more power is needed to get past quickly and safely.

Fuel consumption is also (I feel) disapppointing at an average of 23.8mpg  :( (consistently) which is worse than the Carlton was (which averaged 26.2mpg).

I have yet to clean out the DBW and breathers following AA's excellent guide which is going to be my next job - would I notice a difference from doing this perhaps??

Perhaps my expectations are too high or am I right to feel disappointed???

Not all bad though - at least it looks good and the AC 'climate control' is fantastic!! ;D

General Discussion Area / Wot polish??
« on: 28 April 2007, 22:11:59 »
Just wondering what car polish/wax everyone uses on here to keep their Meega's looking shiny and mint?? :)

My Meega is an '02', looks as though it has never been polished in its life but has had plenty of visits to the car wash!!  The paint looks really 'spider webby' - even more noticable under sodium light; looks like someone cleaned it with a 'brillo pad!!' :o

I would like a smooth, wet 'glass like' finish free from the 'spider web' effect.  Any suggestions??

As a general polish I always tended to use 'Autoglym' super resin but I think in recent years the quality of this product has deteriorated and is now generally pretty poor!!
