I recently did just that job on mine for the MOT. It's not that bad to do, although there is a lot of trim to remove so as not to set the car on fire when welding.

Hi Nick

Did repair both sides?  I found very different conditions on the same car.

Last year I did the repair on my saloon, left side you can see above, right side was in top condition.
Complete blog here:

http://www.modern-classics-forum.de/board5-youngtimer-technik/board6-karosserie/2092-rettung-eines-omega-b/

On my Caravan (Estate) I did the right side two years ago, left side was Tuv acceptable. But now two winters later I have to do the left side on my Estate too.

Lady Saloon is still rust free in this places. She never have to work during wintertime.

Rolf, I only did that one because it failed the MOT and I was pushed for time. Looking through the hole, the car should have failed on rotten sills too; the sill covers hide that rot. I will replace both in the summer when it isn't a rush job, and have time to remove all of the trim, carpet, wiring etc to do a proper, long-lasting job.

The other wheel arch is pretty crusty, but not as bad as the picture.

I still haven't removed the wheelarch covers on mine yet so I've yet to be shocked by the state of the metal underneath, if theres anything left..

Dropped the BMW off at a garage because the front bushes have failed (again .. buy cheap, buy twice!) and I CBA to fix it myself.

They called me later to let me know my MOT expired on the 17th, as well. Oops. So hopefully it passes after they've done the arms!

Big thanks to Tunnie for coming around with his daughter to read suspension codes on the Phaeton with his VAGCOM. The VW dealer will now have some explaining to do as to why the fault code is exactly what the symptoms suggested and does not indicate at all what they were saying the codes were. Guys on the Phaeton site predicted before it went to the dealer what the fault was likely to be and that is what Tunnie has now proven.

Man thanks Mark

Interesting to see what VW say now  :)

This is so embarrassing for the dealer now. I took it back in today. They had Tunnie's output from the VCDS last Monday. They agreed to order the sensors. They have just phoned me to say that they started off NOT changing the sensor I asked them to change and spent 2 hours messing about. They then phoned to say they have tested the ECU and the ECU is showing - yes - an accelerator sensor fault. Spoke to the Service Manager who cannot apologise enough and is not sure where his guys heads were. I said this is serious as without an independent who is not a trained VW MasterTech I would have been on the wrong end of a bill of up to £2000. The part that is needed will arrive tomorrow and takes 20 minutes to fit. I will have to think how far I take this concern. Thanks again Tunnie.

No problem  :y

Glad to hear the VCDS output managed to get things going on the right track, I would hope as bare minimum they won't charge you for this sensor or the fitting.

Did they give you a report, detailing the ECU was 'at fault' - With approx bill to replace?

Happy to help  :y

They only indicated what costs might be but 2 weeks ago they did want me to commit to 2 hours labour testing the wiring. This is when I said I could not believe that the test equipment could not diagnose the fault I took the car back - the dealer said they believed it to be the ECU. I asked  them what system they were using but have not got a proper answer - as said I do not know how far I will take this - I am away on business for a couple of days from tonight so will have a think. They are supposed to drop the car at home tomorrow.

Just to update that problem appears sorted - waited to do a few hundred miles before posting. It was both accelerator sensors at the finish and there has been a stewards enquiry as to how this could possibly happen. I remain concerned at the systems failure that came up with the initial nonsense. Anyhow resolved for now.

Yesterday had new solenoid on Insignia fan system which was buzzing loudly. I thought I was going to have similar issues to Phaeton when they first started talking about a new fan assembly for £400 - anyhow worked out at not very much after the diagnosis fee!!

Good stuff  :y :y :y :y :y

Did VW do the fix as gesture of good will? Considering they messed up!
