Ex bikers make better drives, no doubt.

Bikers have to think so much more than drivers, whats around them, wind conditions, weather conditions.

I can do my commute in exactly the same style in wet or dry, you can't in a bike, you have to avoid man hole covers, painted white lines as they will be slippy.

You have to think about the wind and rain so much more, car drives can just sit there with one hand on the wheel at 80mph in the wet...

Its a fact, plain and simple that x-bikers make better car drivers.[/quote

It doesnt matter what your like in a car thats not the argument, It still doesnt change the fact that the majority ride like bloody hooligans, its like listening to Arsene Wenger this, only see what you want.

 ;D ;D

Maybe cause around your way all bikers have L plates and are still at school? Messing around on 50cc scooters?

Come on now...

By the look of your picture, if that is your car, you have spent money putting all kinds of err 'stuff' on your car, fake stupid bumpers, ironing board for a rear spoler, exhaust the size of mellons, lowering it so you go around corners better, you are all the same, you chav your cars up, then drive around with you caps on, in 2nd gear all the time engine screaming, flying though town, doing spins in car parks, putting stupid neons on....

Hardly stupid chav stuff is it as if you know anything about cars you will know what most of the parts are.

Ohh please, just stop slagging and generalising all bikers.

Btw, your missing a roll cage  ;)

Sitting on the fence for once, i love bikes, wish i'd done my test @17 but you could hop on a 250 in 1980 with L plates & i did...new KH250 2 stroke triple screamer, cracking bike in it's day. It was this or the RD 250DX or the Suzi X7, all 2 stroke. To think of 17yr olds riding these now shows my age! But we could then, all you had to do was turn 17.
The irony is @ 16 i crashed/come off my Fizzy 3 times but despite enjoying the KH no accidents. Could be a lesson for the Nanny state to let us find out for ourselves???     Discuss! 8-)

at the end of a day, you can buy a bike for £1k, and it will give you the performance of a 911 Turbo!

Not that you can go that fast in central London  ::)

First 250 I rode, a cracking bike unfortunaletly it wasn't mine though. :'( I'd to make do with a GT250 when I bought a 250

Come across this thread and feel the need to add a point of view. :)
Bikers make better car drivers as they have greater awareness and understanding, but I would add that Car drivers education would be enhanced if they were to drive Artics and busses and understand the need to use the full lane, visibility and stopping distances. An ideal situation, but not going to happen, so those of us who drive other than in cars must continue to make allowances for some car drivers who have no thought to the needs of other vehicles. My tuppence worth.

pfffft nothing wrong with leathers if for bikes :P

well been pricing up stuff...

CBT + DAS = £750...  That includes test, and if I fail the test, then further tuition and test is free :) (they guarantee a pass)
Triumph Speedmaster = £6199 (but I'll want a pillion seat and sissybar with rear shelf), so be a bit more...
Boots = £150 (YOU try finding a cheaper pair which are classic look)
Other leathers (pants and jacket) = arounf £300

So all in I'm easy looking at around £8000 which isn't too bad I think :)  Got 5k already :D  3 more to go...

But I also have insurance and tax due on the Omega come June/August... bah :(
Might be worth getting a cheaper 2nd hand bike for a year, to keep insurance down.  Plus you may not get on with riding bikes...

Insurance is only 174.37 fully comp... not really much lol!

What!?!  :o :o :o :o

Bloody hell that is cheap as chips, who was that Policy with??
I get a suspicion that he may have said he had NCD  :-/

Nope

No NCD as far as the bike was concerned, it asked for car NCD and bike NCD,

26 years Old

Car NCD = 4 years
Bike NCD = 0 years

Also asked if I drive a car I currently own, Yes

Asked for how long I've had a car license (8 years), bike license (just passed (but said just passed to gauge how much roughly it would be))

6 points (SP50, SP30)

http://www.moneysupermarket.com/bike/

Chose the first link (The Bike Insurer)

I even rang up to double check  ;D

Apparently, being locked in the garage, using safewater dot thing to mark the bike (will be done anyways), and in a pretty good postcode go along way to bring the premium right down :)

Possibly in some way yes, but I had seen the bonne prior tho, its only after you said I came across the speedmaster :D

I went to a dealer earlier today (hence prices) Bill Smiths in Chester, they had 2 in, 1 in Phantom Black, the other Blue.  Definately prefer the all black bike!

Had a sit on it, got a feel for the position, and well, that sealed the deal for me!  So as soon as I have the licence fully sorted, all the funds, I'll be down there and getting the whole lot!

The bottom line is that your view of the world is different whether you're in a bike, a car, a bus or an artic. There are orders of magnitude of difference in performance and handling between the extremes.

I have quite limited experience of driving anything other than a car but enough "pillion time" to realise it's clear that what appears to be a suicidal overtake from a car driver's point of view is actually quite a safe manoevre on a bike. Perhaps we should leave it to bikers to judge other bikers' riding habits?

There are clearly one of two bad eggs amongst bikers, but tell me that's not the case with car / bus /lorry drivers/ pilots / skippers too?

In fact, driving as I do a light car with an above average level of poke, I'm sometimes aware that I've left people thinking that I'm a total hooligan after a perfectly safe overtaking manoevre. The fact is, the parameters are different for me. Not as much so as for a biker but I've got better acceleration, better handling and shorter stopping distances than they are used to, and that is what my judgement is tuned to. My judgement says "safe overtake" theirs, tuned to driving a Ciroen Picasso or somesuch, says "rather hooligan".  :-/

prestigesec - ignorant buffoon that doesn't know his arse from his elbow, has probably never ridden a bike and tries to make up for his jealousy of others by insulting those that do.

"...we car drivers..." - Don't categorise me as the same as you just because I drive a car. I am NOT like you.

"200mph before you die" - yeah...that's driving responsible  ::). Oh, BTW, that was sarcasm just in case you thought I was being serious.

Tunnie - "...riding a bike does make you a better driver.". Oh so true.

Don’t you get the feeling that you are wrong? Everyone else seems to think so. Can’t you see it? Are you blind? Are you really as ignorant as you sound? Do you have to hold your breath when you type because it’s a bit too much for you to do both at the same time?

I have been riding bikes since I was 16 – that was 19 years ago and driving for 15 years, so I feel that I am entitled to have an authoritive opinion. As someone that rides/drives approx 35k miles year, I observe lots of stupidity on the roads of the country. 99.9% of the time, my journey is event-free. However, I find that the most inconsiderate mode of transport is without doubt the car. This is obviously not the fault of the car, but the idiot behind the wheel. There is obviously going to be a small number of bikers that ride like idiots, but to tar all bikers with the same brush is just plain stupid. It’s like saying that all Volvo drivers are boring old farts or that all Police Officers are corrupt – it’s utter crap.

So, get a grip...and get a life.

911 Turbo tried to out accelerate me once, when I was overtaking him. Silly boy....   ....he's not even close on performance, not even close to being in the same league.
